Champion is relaunching its Zone 93 sneaker in partnership with former NBA player Glen Rice, along with a capsule collection of other apparel.
The capsule includes a reissue of the Zone 93 OG high-top shoes, which were the sneakers Rice wore throughout his NBA career, per an email to Fashion Dive. In addition to the sneakers, the collection includes a mesh tank top, shorts, a reverse weave hoodie and crewneck, and a short-sleeve graphic tee. Each piece of apparel includes a graphic of Rice’s signature and his jersey number, 41.
The collection is available on Champion’s e-commerce site beginning Dec. 18, and prices range from $50 to $170.
Ronald van de Wetering, director of footwear for Champion, said the collection was meant to be a tribute to “sneaker enthusiasts and basketball fans of today who appreciate the nostalgic charm of the 90s design.” The collection’s release is also in line with the 30th anniversary of the original shoe, presenting what van de Wetering called a “golden opportunity” for Champion to “reclaim our position in the footwear space” by celebrating its part of sports history.
“The return of Zone 93 is the catalyst to our global footwear collection,” van de Wetering said in an email. “This collection contains inspiration from [Champion’s] storied heritage in sport and at the same time is relevant to the present trends and culture. By telling this story to teach the next generation of Champions about the brand's authentic history we hope that more people see Champion as Glen Rice did — as a canvas for self-expression while pursuing their passions.”
The news comes as Champion’s holding company HanesBrands Inc. is evaluating its options for the business, including a potential sale. Part of this plan involves positioning the brand for growth and profitability while simplifying the business. It recently named a new vice president and chief marketing officer of the brand, Richard Mcleod.
HanesBrands has made a recent effort to attract younger consumers, launching collections like M by Maidenform and the Hanes Originals product line with a national media campaign. Similarly, Champion recently announced a new sustainable collection of crewnecks and joggers with technology firm CiCLO.
HanesBrands’ activewear segment, of which Champion is a part, has been a challenge for the company this fiscal year.
In its most recent earnings report in November, the global Champion business saw a 19% sales decline. At the time of the report, HanesBrands CFO Scott Lewis said it would take a few more quarters for the results of the company’s Champion efforts to take effect.
